Arcane Potential
Arcane Potential refers to extra Spell Reserves for wielding magic. Each Arcane Potential requires a Minor Merit to pursue, and is raised like a skill. It may be taken multiple times, if labeled numerically as I, II, III, IV, etc.
Title
History
Upon Antarok, there exists magi who possess inborn talent, or who have trained their soul to excise more Metaphor.
Acquisition
Arcane Potential is something someone is born with, gained as one ages, or it is the result of a rigorous routine, possibly some manner of Alchemistry supplement. Whichever the reason, the result is the same: that mage possesses expanded spell reserves. Potential for Arcana is more common than Arcana itself, with many Ensorcellers never being initiated into an Arcana at all.
Spell Reserves
Spell Reserves refer to the capacity for a mage to wield various forms of Personal Arcana, expanding how much Metaphor they may tolerate channeling through their soul. Functionally, Arcane Potential allows a final reservoir of excess Spell Reserves that may be used for any Metaphor, meaning a Paladin who burns Luxium to cast will be able to weave more spells by investing in their Arcane Potential.
- The advantage of having Arcane Potential over a traditional form of magic, is that they may be used to cast any manner of Conjuration, even if one is not initiated in a magic with that Metaphor.
This is one cast of Spell Reserves, meaning it will deplete from the same source whether you are casting with the Saol of Glamour, or the Aether of Galdr. When more specific Spell Reserves are available, the mage will tap into those first.
Dedication
- Arcane Potential may be dedicated to an initiation, or to a known Personal Arcana. When this happens, you may convert some or all of your Arcane Potential back into experience for that Personal Arcana, possibly even any spent Merits. You may also 'lose' this gift through any number of narrative reasons, and gain back the experience (and merit) to spend elsewhere. Dedication allows Arcane Potential to serve as a useful 'bank' for your experience when you aren't sure what you want to do with it yet.

You may assign a Major Merit to Arcane Potential by making a request in the Support Forum explaining why a character should have Arcane Potential at an Ascended level. However, to then Dedicate this towards anything that would require a Major Merit, you must still go on a quest worthy of that Dedication.

Contrivances
Ensorcelling
Arcane Potential may be used to satisfy any Spell Reserves requirement of Ensorcelling, enabling them to cast any Conjuration they can work with another mage to get made.
