Dragon Variant: Coatl
Coatl are Dragons which have had their Grist warped by Geomena. Either their mother is a Coatl, or they are turned so by Ascended of Vemana, seeing their Grist crystallize into Tetli. A Coatl's expanded capacity for Saol Spell Reserves transitions to that of Geomena. The Coatl always resembles some form of fauna, race, or fungus native to the Ur'Duun, or else a non-metal mineral, ambulating as a golem might.
Abilities
Chimeric Physiology
Coatl lead difficult lives, feeding exclusively upon what they Embody, yet must only do so seasonally. They are winged serpents at their core, often but not always displayed in rich hues of green and orange. In addition to this, they possess traits of what they Embody, or look entirely like such.
- The Coatl do not have metallic-grade hides like their cousins; rather, theirs is akin to whatever they Embody, with the caveat that they may incorporate more of what they Embody into themselves by 'gluing' it to their bodies and extending their soul throughout. This allows them to repair injuries by reintroducing that same material to their body.
- Those Coatl whom Embody underground Fauna may even replace their own organs with the organs of similar creatures; in many ways, their hoard of Embodied creatures is a kind of restorative lifeline for them. Coatl may only be up to as large as their life stage dictates, however. So long as the crystallized brain and rocky Tetli throat-organs remain intact, Coatl without organs could otherwise survive being mangled and gored beyond recognition, albeit lethargic and weak until they are able to reacquire new material.
Terracopia
Coatl can see the differential hue Geomena within rocks, highlighting their composition more vibrantly and allowing Coatl to distinguish different kinds of rock more accurately at a glance. This lights the caverns of the Ur'Duun to their sight, making it clear and bright to them where a human might see it as pitch black or dim. Everything else but for other Coatl, what they Embody, and the fungal forests of Sloadh will appear dim to them unless truly lit, as if they are shades moving in the dark amid a colorful backdrop; Coatl tend to avoid the other races because of this.
Psychology
Deeply in tune with Geomena, Coatl are the most benign form of Dragon. They feel the heartbeat of the caverns within themselves like a drum, beating higher in their bodies in lieu of or in addition to the organ. This sense magnifies beneath the display of sacrifice, drawing them to value things which are valuable to others, given freely; they enjoy receiving keepsakes, and can tell if the offered object truly meant something to somebody by its hum. They often trade for what they Seek, rarely dominating it unless out of a sense of intense hunger and need. They prefer to be fair, leading to their manipulation by mortal ambitions; however, a Coatl will always fiercely protect its hoard.
- Coatl prefer to fight with ambush tactics, collapsing caverns and hiding their homes behind walls of solid rock within the Ur'Duun using their rock-manipulating breaths. Many of them respect the Dwarves and are revered among the Dwarven peoples.
History
Driven to the Ur'Duun by Faefolk in olden times, Dragons settled the caverns there. The Arche of the Ur'Duun, Quetzalcoatl approached them, offering the embrace of the earth to those who would sacrifice their clutches and kills by din of its Vemana. A few Dragons broke ranks with their queen and departed for the core of the world, roosting there and offering their whelps for sacrifice until they became the first Coatl.
- Coatl are usually loyal to Quetzalcoatl and consider the Arche to be a kind of god of exchange, judging the fairness of their bargains. They are a young species among Fae, but older than the Dwarves. Only one Ancient Coatl exists at present.
Additional Information
- Coatl may only Govern Geomena, and to be Dragonbound to one requires the aid of Quetzalcoatl; this will confer Geomena Spell Reserves rather than Saol.
- Coatl age and grow in the same way as a Dragon; how they appear is similar, if warped by their Tetli.
- Using the Geomena Predation of their Tetli, a Coatl may consume the Geomena within the brain of an older Coatl to advance its age like a Dragon, but cannot consume the Saol from a Dragon and vice versa.
- Like the Dracolych or the Krakon, differing subspecies of Dragon initially revile each other, as both can sense their differences in Grist.
- The Tetli organ of a Coatl may be granted through Outer Alchemy or stolen, allowing other races to become Tetlisi and thus devour the brain of a Coatl to become one; this is very rare as Coatl are revered to the Dwarves who revere them in their pantheon.
- A Coatl may become a Dracolych, but it will only Govern Geomena while being subjected to the same resentment the living dead face; they will lose their Embodiment of a mineral if they have one, gaining something else instead.
- Coatl-Dragon interbreeding will result in a whelp of the mother's species, but they are much more likely to Govern Geomena and Embody or Seek mineral topics, veins, hearts, or sacrifice.
- Coatl which Embody a form of fungus or a Redcap Dryad may naturally develop Sloadh.
- Many Coatl possess Vemana and may spend a Minor Merit to learn it; Inciting Vemana entails engaging in some form of notable ritual sacrifice in honor of oneself, the Metaphor of Geomena, or Quetzalcoatl.
