Wisp

Pact-bound to the great tree Ældrassil, a Wisp is the soul of a deceased Æld'Norai, a form of Ghost. You receive a Free Racial Merit for both the Apparation and the Syphon of a Wisp when playing one.

Description

Contrary to the typical manifestations of the dead, the Wisp’s main defining feature is that it is still rife with Saol. So long as an Æld'Norai’s pact to their tree, Ældrassil, remains intact, they will take on the form of a Wisp in death in lieu of anything else. A Wisp, typically, presents as a concentrated, glowing ball of Aether and Saol, though at times the Wisp in question may choose to project an image of how they were in life. One may encounter them floating around the basin in the Myrkvior mountains, and they become a more common sight the closer one gets to the great tree.

History

Wisps have existed for as long as the Æld'Norai. The pact forged with Ældrassil was facilitated by the Nekron among their founders and it tethered their souls, and thus the souls of their descendents, to the dragon-tree. In so doing, these tethers opened the resultant Æld'Norai up to the tree’s influence more directly, and his magic reshaped their souls into Wisps.

Function

Bound to Ældrassil, Wisps are confined to the tree’s territory at all times. There are multiple different fates that may become of a Wisp as it drifts through the trees of Ælheim.

Rebirth

The most common fate of a Wisp is that they, eventually, reincarnate into a newborn Ælf born within Ælheim. There are quite a few conflicting theories about how long it may take for a recently deceased Wisp to reincarnate, and it is not quite known exactly what triggers a rebirth. The only thing for certain is that if left alone, this will at some point occur.

Grove Guardians

While they yet persist as Wisps, many of them assist in warding away potential intruders from Ælheim. The Wisps themselves are not capable of doing much on their own, but they can communicate with Ældrassil, as well as individual Æld'Norai if they’ve formed a bond– should anyone intrude, they can convey warnings, serving as sentry.

Sources of Saol

Living Æld'Norai can befriend and form bonds with Wisps. Through these bonds, they may form a symbiotic bridge with one another and pool their Saol together. This is also one of the only ways a Wisp may prevent itself from reincarnating should it wish to extend its time as one indefinitely, and severing this bond is as easing as forming it if it were to change its mind.

Tools of the Vitæ

A paradiscipline of Nekron and Draoidh unique to the Æld'Norai, the Vitæ channel their power through Soul Stones forged from Wisps. This transformation is irreversible, and it is typically a fate only reserved for the worst criminals in Ælven society.
