Nymheia grants its practitioners the gift of weaving Saol, allowing them to restore and invigorate anything that lives. Nymheia requires a Minor Merit to pursue.
Nymheia
History
Like any other Pact, Nymheia is an incredibly ancient Arcana. It originated around the same time as the Godhead Mimira and the Plane of Ælphyne, with the native Cambion– the Leshy– being the first to wield it. Nymheia, and by extension the mages who practice it, are generally viewed as a considerable boon by nigh every society– even those who typically eschew magic (though there are still some stubborn few that shirk this source of bountiful benevolence!). Many blessed with this Pact are given high accolades, important roles, or special reverence. Not all Nymhians, however, enjoy the attention foisted upon them for their extremely coveted gifts. For this reason, some of them are not so open about their abilities and instead choose to live more sequestered lives, only bestowing their powers upon those they deem worthy.
Acquisition
The path to acquiring Mimira’s grace, like most Pacts, is not something one can typically ‘seek’ to accomplish. It is exceptionally rare, happens spur of the moment, and almost always in circumstances most dire. For example, somebody’s desperate prayer to save a dying loved one may awaken within them the Saol necessary to cast their first spell and save a life. It has also never once been given to somebody who harms another in an attempt to simulate the former.
Living as a Nymhian
The Pact of Mimira does more than simply grant access to its spells; Nymheia also marks the soul with a heightened sense of empathy, causing them to suffer a portion of the pain– both emotional and physical– felt by those around them. The range of this phenomenon is roughly 50’ in all directions at all tiers of mastery, though the severity of this perception seems to vary based on an array of factors.
For this reason, many Nymhians are wont to use their powers to allay as much suffering in their general vicinity as possible. There are a couple reasons for this; either they want to lessen this effect on themselves, or because now that they feel a portion of what pain others do, they genuinely wish to help them– most often, it’s a combination of both. This is also another driving factor for why some Nymhians live fairly isolated lives– shouldering the burdens of many at all times is incredibly taxing.
Rarely, there are some Nymhians who grow twisted by this (or, perhaps, were always off in this fashion), selfishly using their spells only for their own esoteric designs and relishing in the suffering of others. For example, the Nymhian Haemora absolutely delight in being able to experience the agony they inflict reflected back onto themselves.
Mageburn Symptoms
- Lesser: Lethargy, Headache, Bodyache, Chills, Lightheadedness, Confusion, Weakness, Anxiety
- Moderate: Localized Moderate to Severe Pain, Exhaustion, Vertigo, Paranoia, Anger
- Greater: Transference, Severe Widespread Pain, Berserk Rage
- Transference: If the spell that pushed the Nymhian into Greater Mageburn was meant to cure or heal a wound, that wound or ailment is transferred to the Nymhian, potentially maiming or killing them. In the case of Reawakening, the Nymhian always dies.
Spells
As a Pact forged with the Godhead Mimira, Nymheia utilizes the Metaphor of Saol for casting.
Medica
An infusion of Saol capable of regenerating damaged tissue.
- Medica has a tranquilizing effect; the greater the wound being healed, the more drowsy the recipient will feel as a result. Resistance and/or Meditation (highest is chosen) of equivalent tier can halve this effect while a higher tier will make it only a minor inconvenience, though this cannot be entirely negated.
Elysia
Functionally similar to Medica, Elysia sacrifices potency to allow the Nymhian to affect multiple targets in one cast.
- Also similarly to Medica, Elysia has the same tranquilizing effect as outlined above.
Panacea
An infusion of Saol capable of combating any given ailment, be it disease, virus, poison or parasite—it may even purge the Pathos which fuels the growth of malignant tumors. One cast per effect cured.
- For up to three days after receiving treatment, the recipient of Panacea will find themselves experiencing minor short term memory lapses, mild confusion, obliviousness, or melancholy. The length of this effect increases by 1 day and the severity doubles per consecutive use of the spell on the same patient.
Ameliorate
A temporary blessing of Saol that increases a living target’s natural healing capabilities.
- For the duration of the spell, the recipient of Ameliorate will find themselves experiencing a similar effect to the consumption of Unspoken Water, feeling either melancholic or intensely calm depending on their personality.
Gild
A temporary blessing of Saol that increases the overall defensive capabilities of a living target (tissue density, flexibility, force resistance, etc.). All of a given target’s anatomy is affected.
- The recipient of Gild will also find their bodies numb to pain; a double edged sword, as one may suffer catastrophic damage without realizing it because of this.
Excite
A temporary blessing of Saol that revitalizes a living target, warding off fatigue and granting them additional energy.
- Under the effect of Excite, the recipient will experience a feeling of bliss accompanied by a shortened attention span. Oftentimes, those under the effects of Excite must be reminded of what they’re supposed to be doing.
Reawakening
The Nymhian may return a dead target to life. The target’s soul must be intact and must not have already been reincarnated in any form or fashion. This spell does not work on bones or corpses that are desiccated or extremely mutilated.
- The condition of the corpse matters insofar as the state of the reawakened:
- A fresh corpse in good condition will awaken immediately upon completion of the cast, but they will have temporary amnesia; they won’t remember how they died. Further, they will be easily confused and exhausted. If applicable, all of their Spell Reserves will be drained to a novice volume.
- A long dead or degraded corpse will result in the reawakened target being locked in a coma for up to a week as their body heals itself. When they awaken, they will suffer the effects outlined above.
This spell must be cast by a Nymhian; it does not work with Saolite alone.
