Arcanics also known as the "Arcanon" is a partially-lost Practice for manipulating portals, space, time, and other Planar phenomena. Pursuing Arcanics requires 100 Experience in Ensorcelling.
Arcanics
History
First devised by a Paragon lost to ages past, Arcanics was wielded by Jin'Norai in the age of Mirage Kingdoms; as a Practice for manipulating space and time with Alkahest, it was seen as the most coveted and mysterious of Arcane sciences. Today, Arcanics is known only by those who maintain expansive Portal networks across the Plane of Antarok, and many of its Revelations have been lost.
Concepts
- Viaduct
- The Viaduct is an Aetheric Tether between two points in space, woven into a cable as one walks. This is capable of receiving and transferring Glyphics information.
- Ley Resonance
- What level of Arcanistry an area may sustain in relation to another; Arcanics is always built along these relational points in space.
- Revelation
- Branches of Arcanics study are referred to as "Revelations," often described but not known by practitioners without a Moderated Quest by Desiderata, Haruspex, or Vicissitude.
Arcanic Tools
Questions about technology level? Ask the setting’s Storyteller.
The original tools of Arcanics are each artifacts in their own right. They were fashioned by a Paragon, and then by the long-lost original Grandmasters of Arcanics who carried these technologies forward. Each Revelation has one or more specific tools which must be discovered to revive that field of study. Today, only the tools of Viaducty may be found in the workshops of old ruins:
- Dowsing Syncope: The Dowsing Syncope is a thin tiera of Aetherite which allows its wielder to determine the Lay Resonance of what they can see. Extended use confers a high blood pressure headache capable of causing fainting without 100 experience in Fitness or a Galdr Arcana.
Cost: 1,000 SP.
- Aetherloom: The Aetherloom is a pair of gleaming, golden needles, threads tied down to a tangle of invisible Viaduct Tethers. They seem to idly reproduce with time. One of the needles is a spatial punch for pushing the needle through the seams of reality, while the other captures unwoven Viaducts and allows them to be affixed to objects.
Cost: 1,000 SP.
- Ley Rod: The Ley Rod is a device which harmonizes Alkahest to the Frequency of one or more points of Ley Resonance by vibrating upon striking a surface.
Cost: 1,000 SP.
Obtaining additional tools beyond these will require undergoing a 'Moderated Quest by Vicissitude, Haruspex, or Desiderata.
Revelations
Much of Arcanics has been lost to the world; only Viaducty is known to the common practitioner of Arcanics. Additional Revelations may be discovered via moderated quests.
Viaducty
Viaducty is the art of fashioning Portals along two points of Ley Resonance, or connecting Glyphics into the air between two points via a Tether.
Dowsing
This is accomplished by first dowsing two compatible points of Ley Resonance; often perhaps a singular point within a region of fifty square miles will suffice as an appropriate linkage, entailing substantial travel and study of the area. This process typically takes two weeks at a minimum. Contact your local Storyteller to have them choose where your Ley Resonance points shall be.
- Static Portals
- Once this is done, create or place upon each point of space a static structure. Glyphics are used to describe the dimensions of an eventual portal upon a solid surface or enclosed doorway such as a ring. This may be something as simple as a cairn of stones or the hollow of a tree grown upon that spot, but it might also be a grand structure like a pyramid, vault, or tower the Arcanist has built there.
- Portable Portals
- One portal, or the destination portal, must be static by design. The steps for creating this half of the pair is much the same, though the Aetherite cost is 3x the total of that which is required for standard portal pairs. Almost all of this additional Alkahest must be reinforced into the destination portal's frame with only a silver being implanted into the portable one to facilitate Looming them together.
- The portable portal first starts with a physical object, most commonly tablets or talismans carved of stone, metal or another durable resource. This object may be any size so long as the craftsman is capable of implanting the necessary silver and inscribing the requisite Glyphics upon its surface. The Glyphics will link the single Ley Resonance point to the object as well as describe the dimensions of the portal it will project, with the point of projection being the sliver.
Looming
Looming entails linking two objects together via Aetheric Tethers woven into a cable referred to as a Viaduct. This is accomplished by puncturing a hole in the fabric of reality and weaving Aetheric Tethers through it, winding them together until they begin to stretch as the Arcanist moves. Either end may be attached to a point of Ley Resonance, or else one or more Viadic Exaltations meant to harness its power.
- Heirlooms
- Looming can be used to transpose Conjurations or Exaltations from far away into an object in spite of the immense weight of powerful Alkahest. These "Exalted Heirs" or "Heirlooms" as they are called confer receive disruptive feedback upon the Exaltation they draw from once they are destroyed, necessitating that the Exaltation be renewed with Alkahest as if a season had already passed. They cast a subtle bluish-white glow, smelling of ozone to those that near them; this is used to create elaborate hallways of permanent, yet dim blue light fixtures out of Exaltations made from Dust.
- Thinner cables may be used to subdivide large Exaltations into many smaller Heirs of lesser-tier Spell Reserves; for example, three Expert-tier casts could be derived from a Master-tier Exaltation if applicable. Glyphics may be used to conditionally limit how often these spells are used, and by whom for the purposes of individual or national regulation.
Harmonizing
Harmonizing creates Portals between two points of Ley Resonance which have been appropriately Loomed together. This is done by striking one of the points with a Ley Rod repeatedly, adjusting the harmonic tone of Viaducty until it is clear enough for a spatial anomaly to be formed between them. When paired with an Aetherite Conjuration or Exaltation, this ignites a Portal upon or within a solid surface or fully enclosed doorway.
Webbing
Webbing is the art of weaving the knotwork of Glyphics invisibly around an object. This is extraordinarily difficult to do if one cannot see their Viaducty, requiring Apprentice Tailoring as well as Grandmastery in Mysticism or else a cast of mastery-tier sensory Arcana such as that of Galdr.
- One may use Webbing to fashion Heirlooms, create traps, or to weave Conjurations on the fly provided they have an Aetherloom.
